As you take a moment with this piece and the song that inspired it, I urge you to listen to the lyrics, recognize the figurative response to the words, and experience the emotional colours of the music.

You may interpret this song in another way but I thought I'd share my take on it that informed the concept and presentation.

Presumably we come from a place of love at birth and we try, in our journey, to live it.

When relationships cloud that and interfere with self care we need to acknowledge it, pull on our inner strength to stop it, and retract from the situation if necessary. The person you are withdrawing from is living their own shadows, closing themselves off to opportunities of care from another, and in turn, themselves.

While relationships leave marks in our history, the process moves us to learn and grow to better care for our self and others.

colour & mixed media relevance

The sax has long been one of my favourite instruments and when I heard this song, the music presented itself to me in teals and blues. The figures are purples and greys so that no matter what your flesh tone is, you can relate to the imagery. The female figure here is brighter purples as she removes herself and comes through this relationship on the other side as a vibrant, strong woman. The male figure has been grayed to indicate his distance from and withholding of, commitment. My palette is heavily influenced by my studies of the colours associated with the key energy points of our Chakra system. I utilize them to convey the concept and motivate an intuitive response from you. Given the relevance and inspiration the words inspired, I chose to extract some of the text from the song and position them within to relate to the figures' actions. While most are obliterated, they linger in the surrounding with a weight and movement that leads you through the ideas that the words present, as does Annette's voice. The broken mirror pieces are intended to allow you to put yourself in to the position of these figures as you hear their story.

Many thanks to Annette & The Revtones for the use of this song both to inspire and enable the listening experience for viewers.
